Fundraise Focus: Replacing CCAC’s Stolen Van

CCAC kids going to work on the DASH bus. Despite their van stolen, they continue to perform their anti-graffit / beautification duties in the neighborhoods.

COVID has been tough on many of us. It’s been tough on CCAC.

In 2021, CCAC’s Ford Econoline van was stolen from the CCAC parking lot on Edgeware in Angelino Heights. It was later found in South Los Angeles being used as a homeless shelter. It was a total loss. Insurance did not pay enough to replace it.

In addition, CCAC used funds to protect the graffiti removal trucks in their parking lot. Why? Because the catalytic converters were getting stolen. They ended up having to replace a truck and installed barbed wire to the property.

CCAC uses a van for their youth job program and other group activities.

What’s the solution for now? The kids use DASH buses to complete their anti-graffiti / beautiication work around our neighborhoods. This adds another layer of organization and challenge. Hauling equipment and people around by DASH bus is not easy, but the kids have been completing their duties. They’ve struck up good friendships with the DASH bus drivers who understand they need more time to get their equipment on the bus. Thanks DASH!

Our 2022 goal for artUnite is to help CCAC in part or whole purchase a solid, safe, reliable 12-15 passenger van.

Please help us reach this goal for artUnite 2022.

Art Show and Auction Brings Community and Artists Together for 50-year Old Non-Profit in Echo Park

artUnite Art Show and Auction supports Central City Action Committee and their youth programs for challenged youth in Echo Park, Westlake and nearby areas.

Fusing community and arts, artUnite raises funds for a deserving non-profit established by Latin mothers in the 70s. The mothers realized they were losing their youth to gangs and neglect of their Echo Park community. They took a stand and organized. 50 years later, their mission still resonates.

Taking place from November 17 to 18, artUnite begins with an online auction and ends Thursday, November 18, with a live event from 6-9 PM. Neighborhood gallery Tropico de Nopal Gallery Art-Space in Echo Park hosts the event bridging citizens, artists, young people, activists and volunteers in a celebration of life and survival.

According to 87-year old CCAC Director Maryanne Hayashi:

"Over the last 3 years, artUnite has become an important addition to our annual budget. Not only are we helping kids to succeed in life, but we’re helping their families get through challenging times. The event also raises awareness of what we do in the community. Sometimes you get so busy with the day-to-day that you wonder if the community remembers you. I mean, it’s been 50 years! We’ve gone through some generations here. For myself, I’ve been here for 40 years as a director. It’s gratifying that for one night you see the community come together for the kids and the organization. It’s only one night, but it means a lot.”

With over 70 art pieces and artists, artUnite has managed to raise $15,000 for CCAC over the last 2 years. Well-established names such as Frank Romero, Margaret Garcia, Shepard Fairey and Gronk co-mingle with lesser-known names that may be starting their journey. In its own chaotic way, the show and auction creates an eclectic selection of art. “We have pieces worth thousands of dollars, but we also have pieces that anyone can acquire for a couple hundred dollars,” says artUnite organizer Joe Cloninger. “It’s a giving environment, but really, we want people to enjoy the art and celebrate whether they have money or not.”

And the celebration will be safe. artUnite will be enforcing the new city COVID vaccine mandate for events. Vaccine IDs will be required. Masks required.

Don’t have the big bucks to bid on art? That’s fine. artUnite has created a raffle offering a grand prize of a 2-night stay in a beautiful Lake Gregory mountain house along with generous meal certificates from local favorites Casita del Campo Mexican Restaurant and Masa of Echo Park, one of the best outside-of-Chicago, Chicago-style pizzas in the city. DJ Yukicito will be spinning latin electronica out on the spacious patio.

Hybrid Event for artUnite 2021

A new event format for artUnite 2021

A new event format for artUnite 2021

Coming on the heels of 2020’s successful online-only event, artUnite 2021 brings 2 events in one. This year artUnite will be a hybrid event. What’s a hybrid event you ask? artUnite will have an art show at Tropico De Nopal Art Gallery - a live event on Thursday, November 18, 6-9 PM.

At the same time, there will also be an online event parallel to the live event. The online auction platform will run November 17-18 and will be present at the live and online events.

“The 2020 online event raised almost $10,000 for Central City Action Committee,” said Joe Cloninger at artUnite. “We reached an audience beyond the local audience and it made a real difference, especially with the pandemic. We’re still in a pandemic and a hybrid event made since for many reasons - safety, audience reach, fundraising and some sense of normalcy as we move through this new world.”

Starting November 4, 2021, City of Los Angeles requires: Proof of full vaccination for COVID-19 (paper or digital ID) to enter the event for adults 18 and over with photo ID. People 12 years or older will need to show proof of full vaccination for entry, but no photo ID will be required. Everyone must wear a well-fitting mask at all times while indoors. Los Pinguos join artUNite Event

Los Pinguos play a special set for artUnite event November 19, 7-9 PM

Los Pinguos play a special set for artUnite event November 19, 7-9 PM

Los Pinguos have graciously donated a musical set to our November 19th event! Thanks guys.

Los Pinguos came to the United States from Buenos Aires, Argentina, with a mixture of Latin rhythms, reggae, rumba flamenca and rock. The sound of the band has claimed fans worldwide. The story began in 1999 when Adrián Buono, Enzo Buono, José Agote, Juan Manzur and Juan Manuel Leguizamón (later joined by bassist Santiago Lee) formed the band. In early 2001, Los Pinguos arrived in the City of Los Angeles and began playing on the street (3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica) and local bars. Shortly, they participated in a new television show, “The Next Big Star,” hosted and produced by Ed McMahon from “Star Search.” Los Pinguos won the contest and received the grand prize. Since then, they have recorded many albums and have appeared on three of the famous Putumayo World Music compilation albums. Los Pinguos have performed worldwide in places such as India, Bali, The Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, Italy, Netherlands, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Canada, and throughout the United States. The band participated in the award-winning documentary on street musicians Playing For Change and continue to play and support the Playing For Change organization. They’ve played with such acts as Plácido Domingo, Paul Anka, Taj Mahal, The Skatalites, The Neville Brothers, Pablo Montero, Ozomatli, Cigala and Charly García. Currently, Los Pinguos are supporting their newest release - Hummingbird, on the Playing For Change label.
